Illness Led To Volunteer Work

Lucy and Lindsay Schaefer will bring in the new year from a very special vantage point - atop a Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade float.

The mother/daughter duo, who live in Chino Hills, are among several honored guests who have been invited to ride on the Ronald McDonald House Charities Southern California entry: "Time for a Family Gathering."

Lucy and Lindsay were the unanimous choice by the Orange County Ronald McDonald House selection team. They have been volunteering at the house for more than three years, but Lucy, Lindsay's mom, has also been a resident.

When Lindsay, now 15, was 9 months old she was diagnosed with hemolytic-uremic syndrome, a disease characterized by abnormal breakdown of red blood cells, acute renal failure and a low platelet count. The disease, caused by pneumococcus bacteria, shut down her kidneys and led to severe heart complications. She was admitted to Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and underwent several heart surgeries and dialysis treatments...
