The Chino Valley Unified School District held informational meetings Thursday night to answer questions and discuss a new program where trained detection dogs will conduct inspections of Ayala, Buena Vista, Chino, Chino Hills and Don Lugo High Schools as well as Canyon Hills, Magnolia, Ramona, Townsend and Woodcrest Junior High Schools. The dogs are trained to detect the presence of illicit drugs, alcohol and gunpowder-based items.
The school district has hired Interquest Detection Canines® to carry out the program. Their web site states their goal as a "comprehensive detection and deterrence program... to reduce the presence of drugs, beverage alcohol, abused medication and weapons on campus and school grounds."
The program works by providing random, unannounced visits where a designated coordinator escorts the canine teams and observes the inspection activities. They normally inspect lockers, gym areas, common areas, vehicles, vacated classrooms, and perimeters of school properties.
More information is available from your junior high school or high school principal. The program will begin in the second semester.
