Canyon Crest Area of Chino Hills State Park
Owners want to develop; activists want to preserve 'one of the last free spaces' in O.C.

To some, it's a place for wildlife to flourish. To others, it's a spot to build estate-style homes with a great view.

To all, it's called Canyon Crest. And while the two sides have been butting heads since 1986, controversy about the undeveloped site is likely to become more intense September 16 at the next Brea City Council study session, where the council will discuss what to do with what activists are calling "one of the last few unprotected open spaces in Orange County."

The public will likely to get its first chance to weigh in at a hearing sometime this fall, although there is no set date yet.

The 367-acre open space, nestled next to Chino Hills State Park, is the proposed building site of 165 single-family, executive style homes in a gated community; a development, the city says, that it greatly needs.
