ONTARIO - Chino Hills quarterback Ryan Verdugo's debut was so good, even his handoffs were game-changing.
Twice the junior fooled Chaffey defenders peering into the backfield with counter handoffs that fueled a near-perfect first half in Chino Hills' 32-14 win over Chaffey in both teams' season opener Thursday night.
Chino Hills converted each of its four first-half possessions into touchdowns - and a 26-0 lead - during which its defense held Chaffey to 78 total yards and zero points.
Verdugo finished 6-for-8 for 90 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception. But it was one counter play on each of the first two possessions that combined to account for 87 of Chino Hills' 285 total yards and led to an all important 14-0 lead that crippled Chaffey's clock-churning style.
"We prepared for the counter but their quarterback executed it so well," Chaffey coach Chris Brown said. "I think some of our guys were looking in the backfield and that's what got us in trouble."
