With three storm fronts expected to move through San Bernardino County over the next three days, Chino Valley Fire District Fire Chief Paul Benson asks residents to be prepared and maintain personal safety first. It is important to note that most cars can be swept away in 18-24 inches of moving water.
Once a vehicle is swept downstream, it will often roll to one side or flip over entirely, giving the occupants only a few seconds to escape. Chino Valley Fire District firefighters ask everyone to turn around and go another direction when faced with a flooded roadway.
There are sandbags available to residents that need them at Fire Station 1, located on 13251 Central Avenue in Chino, at Fire Station 2, located on 5551 Butterfield Road in Chino Hills and at Fire Station 4, located on 16231 Canon Lane in Chino Hills.
The following additional safety tips are provided to help keep you and your family safe:
- Never drive around marked flood barricades placed by public safety personnel and never drive into floodwater. Water over a road, no matter how deep or shallow, can hide washed-out roads.
- Never attempt to walk or wade through flowing water. As little as six inches of rapidly moving water can sweep you off your feet and carry you downstream.
- When faced with water-covered roads, always take an alternate route or wait until the water recedes.
- If you or someone around you needs help, dial 911. For more information on winter safety and how
