On August 23rd, the Chino Hills Champion published a story about School Board President, Michael Calta proposing a resolution for the school board to officially endorse Proposition 8. Subsequently, the editors criticized Mr. Calta's decision, calling it "Not a good proposal". The Editor cited various opposing arguments and made a few of his own. We think that Mr. Calta's decision is a good one and in keeping with the even keel and straight course that the Champion acknowledges has been the case under Mr. Calta's leadership and participation. We'd like to refute some of the claims made in the August 30 editorial section of the Champion...
The editor stated that endorsement of a political issue by a school board can be distracting and divisive. He also stated that the application of the proposed measure to the quality of education is questionable.
The people I've talked to do not consider his proposal distracting. They consider it a factor in education, one that involves the children of California. At least Mr. Calta cited research he had done in his interview with the reporter. The editor cited none, stating it was lacking in scientific support. But the truth is that we don't need "scientific support" to understand that two parent, mom and dad families offer the best environment for our children to be educated under but more important, our children are not science experiments.
The original article placed quotation marks around "personal conviction" and writers to the Champion stated that Mr. Calta should leave his personal convictions at the door. People who I've talked to voted for Mr. Calta because of his personal knowledge and his personal convictions. We arrive at our convictions based on our research, experience, knowledge, and intelligence. There is nothing wrong with that.
1. What is distracting and divisive are measures like SB 777 that are now going to force teachers to discuss adult oriented gender and sexual issues with children in 1st and 2nd grade.
2. What's distracting and divisive is when special interests groups choose to target our children through the schools to promote their own interests. Things like SB 777 were dreamed up and forced upon our teachers by special interests and tricky politicians who made plans at remote meetings that didn't involve any parents in this district.
3. What's distracting and divisive is when our teachers have to give up time teaching language, math, science, history, and geography to promote experimental special interest ideals.
So the way I look at it, our schools and our teachers, and our society are under attack by special interest groups. A lot of legislation being passed today has little to do with the benefit of our children and much to do with the benefits and goals of special interests. We applaud Mr. Calta's efforts to stand up for and protect our kids from this onslaught of our schools and our society.
