Nell Soto, a longtime Latina activist who represented Pomona in the California state Assembly for 10 years, died Thursday. She was 82.

Soto was recovering from a stroke, said her granddaughter, Pomona City Councilwoman Danielle Soto.

The sixth-generation Pomona resident helped pass legislation to clean up groundwater in the Chino and Rialto basins, create safer school routes for children and start parent-involvement initiatives.

Her late husband, Phil Soto, was one of the first Latinos to serve in the state Legislature in the 1960s.

She also served for 12 years on the Pomona City Council.
