Dear Cyn,
I recently received a party invitation calling for "cocktail casual" attire. What is cocktail casual?

Dear Becky,
What the heck? When I envision "cocktail casual" I picture sipping a martini in a pair of jeans. Sounds like a made-up term to me...either way "cocktail casual" is anything the host/hostess wishes it to be. You will not appear as some country bumpkin if you call to inquire just exactly what the attire expectations are for this event.
People need to remember that when they put these creative and whimsical terms on invites, it creates a lot of stress on the guests who are trying to figure out what to wear! Good rule of thumb, you should be safe in a little black dress or nice slacks and a dressy shirt or sweater. When in doubt, darker colors and conservative cuts (no cleavage) will always be a safe choice. However, if you are invited to one of my parties, wear what you please...I could care less!
See you in the city,
Cyn
