On Energy, Let A Thousand Filaments Bloom. There is no single way to wean the U.S. from fossil fuels.
The Environmental Protection Agency's announcement this week that it has taken a first step toward regulating carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels marks another milestone in reshaping the way America uses energy. Although regulations are not imminent, the decision reinforces the sense that the United States is starting a generation-long transition from the fossil fuels linked to global warming toward renewable alternatives.
Even as that process begins, one thing is clear: There is no single way to wean the U.S. from fossil fuels. The only answer will be to let a thousand flowers, or maybe filaments, bloom.
In that context, it is worth noting that Southern California Edison, a giant utility, this month began installing 16,850 solar panels on the roof of a warehouse in Chino, east of Los Angeles.
