Scott Elder, a senior at Ayala High School, and Natalya Jaime, a senior at Rosary High School in Fullerton, make the most of their free time. For Earth Day 2008, Scott and Natalya were busy putting the finishing touches on the City of Chino Hill's Storm Water Program's exhibit entitled: "Your Neighborhood Watershed". As a senior, Scott spent two weeks of his summer vacation studying the Chino Hills watershed. Scott presented his findings in the Ayala High School Science Fair, where he finished in first place. After finishing first at his high school, Scott entered his project in the County Science Fair, and was recognized with a second place honor. Scott will be attending Cal Poly Pomona in the fall, and intends on majoring in environmental chemistry.
Natalya Jaime is a Chino Hills volunteer in the City's storm water compliance program, where during her junior and senior high school years, Natalya logged more than 300 volunteer hours entering water quality inspection results into the San Bernardino County Storm Water Data Base. Natalya will be attending Salve Regina University in Rhode Island, in the fall. Natalya hopes to double major in business and theater arts.
The exhibit "Your Neighborhood Watershed" illustrates how water is conveyed through the municipal storm drain system, receiving no filtering or processing before being discharged to located creeks, stream, and rivers. The exhibit hopes to correct the misunderstanding many people have when they think that street storm drains lead to the sewage treatment plant.
The exhibit will be on display in the Utility Billing reception area of the City of Chino Hills Finance Department located at 2001 Grand Avenue, Chino Hills. Visitors are encouraged to pick up free information on protecting water quality, recycling, and other environmental topics. The exhibit will be on display from April 30, 2008 through May 30, 2008.
