If you are in the market to replace your computer there are some things to consider before deciding what to do with your old computer. If you are replacing your computer because its running slow, there is a good chance the computer just needs some optimization and minor hardware upgrades. Older computers can make good secondary computers for your kids or can be donated to your local church for use. If your computer is running an older operating system than Windows XP it will not be worth investing any more money into it. I will get into how to properly dispose of those older computers later. Microsoft has stopped supporting Operating Systems such as Windows 95, Windows ME and Windows 98. Windows XP was released late 2001 and is Microsofts most enduring Operating System to date, they will continue to sell it through 2010 and should provide support for it long after.

From a hardware standpoint, in order to justify investing more money into your older computer you want to make sure that the processor is a Pentium 4 1.0Ghz/AMD Equivalent or better. The second thing we would look at is to see how much RAM your computer has. By adding 1GB stick of RAM to your computer it will dramatically increase the speed of your computer. More programs can run simultaneously and your turn on and shut down times will be much faster.

If your computer is running out of storage space you can make more space by deleting your older data, burning it onto a CD/DVD or copying it to an external Hard Drive. Another option would be to add an additional hard drive to your computer.

Most of these upgrades can be done for a reasonable price and in doing so you can extend the life your computer by 2-4 years.

Now that you have upgraded your computer you can keep It around longer and begin your home network. By creating a home network you can share internet connection, share multiple printers, share pictures and music throughout your home.

If it turns out that it is not worth upgrading your old pc it is important that you dispose of it properly. There are hazardous materials, metals and plastics that can be recycled. Old CRT Monitors and other computer components should all be disposed of in this way. If you have any questions consult your local computer services company.
